Why Fabric Bundles Are a Quilter's Best Friend (And How to Use Them)

Why Fabric Bundles Are a Quilter's Best Friend (And How to Use Them)

If you’ve ever spent an hour staring at your fabric stash trying to pull together a palette that actually works, a fabric bundle is about to become your new best friend.

I’m a huge fan of bundles — and not just because they save time (though they absolutely do). It’s because a well-curated bundle takes all the guesswork out of colour and value, and lets you get straight to the part you actually love: the sewing.

What is a fabric bundle?

A fabric bundle is a pre-selected collection of coordinating fabrics, usually cut to a standard size — fat quarters (50cm x 55cm) or fat eighths — and chosen to work beautifully together. Rather than hunting through individual bolts trying to find prints that harmonise, someone has already done that work for you.

Our bundles here at The Quilting Owl are curated from Edyta Sitar’s Laundry Basket Quilts fabric ranges, which means they already share that signature warm, vintage palette she’s known for. Mix and match within a bundle, or combine bundles from different collections — they’re designed to play nicely together.

Why bundles are brilliant for quilters

They take the colour stress away. Choosing fabrics that work together is genuinely one of the hardest parts of quilting. A bundle solves that instantly — the value range, the print scale variety, and the colour harmony are already sorted.

They’re perfect for scrappy quilts. If you’re working on a scrappy project, a fat quarter bundle gives you exactly the variety you need without the commitment of buying full metres.

They’re great value. Buying a bundle is almost always better value than buying the same fabrics individually — and you get a cohesive collection rather than a random mix.

They make wonderful gifts. A beautiful fat quarter bundle is one of the loveliest things you can give a quilter. It’s thoughtful, practical, and immediately inspiring.

How to use a bundle

The simplest approach is to use the bundle as-is — cut your pieces from the fabrics as they come and let the variety do the work. For a scrappy quilt, this is ideal.

If you want a little more control, lay all the fabrics out before you start cutting and group them by value (light, medium, dark). This helps you distribute the tones evenly across your quilt top and avoid accidentally clustering all your darks in one corner.

You can also supplement a bundle with a few extra fabrics from your stash — a low-volume background, a stripe for sashing, or a bold accent. Bundles are a starting point, not a rule.
